Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
