Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
