A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
